APGAR SCORING



 Introduction
APGAR is also known as babies first test after birth
DR. Virginia APGAR, an anesthesiologist develop APGAR test in 1952.
Definition
The APGAR scoring is a quick assessment tool used to assess health and wellbeing of newborn infant after birth. 
Or 
APGAR scoring is a initial assessment of newborn child immediate after birth. 

Meaning of APGAR 
A- Appearance (Skin tone
G- Grimace (Reflexes)
A- Activity (Muscle tone)
R- Respiration (Breathing)

 The Five signs evaluated 
1. Appearance :- The Baby's skin tone is observed to assess oxygen level, A score of  0 is given if the baby appears pale of blue all over, 1 If there is some bluish discoloration of extremities and 2 if the baby has a normal pink color. 
2. Pulse :- The heart rate is assessed by listening to the baby's heartbeat. A score of 2 is given for heart rate above 100 beats per minute, 1 for heart rate below 100 beats per minute, and 0 if there is no detectable heart rate. 
3. Grimace :-  The Grimace response assess the baby's reflexes. A score of 2 is given if the baby sneeze, cough or cry, 1 if the response minimal and 0 if there is no response. 
4. Activity :- The evaluate the baby's muscle tone or activity. A score of 2 is given if the baby exhibits active movement and flexin of limbs. 1 if there is some flexion but overall muscle to decrease, and 0 if there is no movement at all. 
5. Respiration :- The respiration is assess the baby's breathing. A Score of 2 given if the baby is cry, 1 if the baby has a weak cry or Breathing irregularly. And 0 if the baby is not breathing at all.
